The daily news has turned uglier than ever -- persecutions, deceivers, revolutions, wars, rumors of wars, earthquakes, famines, pestilence, plagues, fearful events, and great signs from heaven.
Does this sound familiar? Of course it does, because Jesus told us about this and more, concerning this world's last days. These are not pleasant times for God's Church, but they point to a level of realism that the Church must never forget: this planet is headed for judgment, and our testimony of Christ is crucial for its salvation.
Jesus warned that Jerusalem's desolation is near when we see it surrounded by armies. Based on recent events, that day doesn't seem very far away anymore.
Warnings from Jesus that may be less familiar are that the sea will cause nations to be in anguish and perplexity, and the sun, moon and stars will bear signs. Without a doubt, this is all very unsettling and gruesome to think about.
But the ultimate significance of this scenario really depends on what kind of eyes we use. From a natural perspective, this phenomenon is one of terror. But from the vantage point that God has provided His people, we have reason to be encouraged, and even joyful.
Jesus uses the example of a fig tree sprouting leaves -- pointing to summer's nearness. We know that each development is a sign of something important about to happen. Jesus tells us that as we see these developments, we should stand up and lift our heads, because our redemption is drawing near.
At the same time, Jesus warns us to keep aware of the meaning of these times, because a failure to do so is a trap for the unwary. He says that we must remain in a prayerful watch, with a mind toward being spared of what inevitably will occur on this earth.
Jesus is coming soon. He promises to return both "in the clouds," and "with power and glory." He promises also to give to everyone according to what they have done. He says: "Blessed are those who wash their robes, that they may have the right to the tree of life and may go through the gates into the city. Outside are the dogs, those who practice magic arts, the sexually immoral, the murderers, the idolaters and everyone who loves and practices falsehood."
This is no time to mince words. This world is choking to death on its sin. When Jesus first came into the world, it was not to condemn it, but that it through Him should be saved. God is inviting all of us, despite any vile thing we have done in the past, to come to Him now before He returns.
