August Is National Immunization Awareness Month

National Immunization Awareness Month is intended to increase awareness about immunizations across the life span, from infants to the elderly. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), individuals who keep up-to-date on recommended vaccines can protect themselves, their families and friends and their communities from serious, life-threatening infections.

While most of us associate vaccination with childhood years, many adults may find helpful an adult immunization schedule that the CDC has made available. According to the National Academies, because elderly persons are the highest risk group among adults, immunizations are strongly recommended for people above age 60.

According to University of Iowa Hospital and Clinics, vaccines are both very safe and effective, with only minor side effects including soreness at an injection site, low-grade fever, or fussiness in some infants.
